Family Food Program

Community Storehouse solicits, warehouses, and distributes both perishable and nonperishable groceries to families living in impoverished conditions. Since its founding in 2001, this program has assisted over 23,000 unduplicated individuals, consisting of over a quarter of a million boxes of groceries. This program focuses on the working poor, disabled, elderly, and otherwise disadvantaged.

Food Rescue Program

Every day Community Storehouse volunteers collect produce, dairy, meat, bakery, and self-stable items from local grocers. Thousands of pounds of high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise be discarded are rescued and delivered to where they're needed most.

Food for Kids: School Backpack Program

Food for Kids makes a difference in the lives of impoverished children by providing kids identified by school personnel as being at-risk for hunger, with discrete backpacks, filled with nutritious, child-friendly foods. This program is designed to meet the needs of children who rely on free school meals as their only - or only reliable - source of food. Currently, the program serves 1,000 children in Southside Virginia.

Health & Hygiene Program

For those depending on food stamps to acquire enough food to feed their families, buying personal hygiene items and over-the-counter medications presents a difficult obstacle to overcome. Thanks to our community partners, this program has provided millions of dollars' worth of product to needy families to foster a healthier, happier community.

Books for Kids: Educational Program

The ratio of books to children in middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books to 1 child; the ratio in low-income neighborhoods is 1 book to every 300 children. Access to books, of topics of personal interest, is essential to a child's reading development. To foster education in at-risk youth, Community Storehouse provides children participating in the Food for Kids program with 12 new books they can take home, read, and keep.

Employment Training Program

Community Storehouse has a 16,000 square-foot thrift store - the organization's largest fundraiser, which doubles as a training site for several federal programs, from individuals currently on welfare being rehabilitated into the workforce, to seniors needing recent job references and skills training. The store has employed hundreds of individuals since the employment training program began.
