About Us
Community Storehouse was founded in 2001 as a grassroots effort to feed & clothe impoverished families in Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia.
Southside Virginia was once known as the furniture and textile capital of the world; now it's best known for the highest unemployment rate in the state.
Since its founding the Community Storehouse has grown into one of the largest influences on the fight against poverty and hunger in Southside Virginia.
This organization exists to solicit, warehouse, and distribute food to community individuals living in impoverished conditions. The organization reduces food waste by reclaiming food that would otherwise go to our landfills. It also provides community leadership and education on issues related to food, nutrition, and hunger.
40% of families served by Community Storehouse have at least one working member in the household. Many are single parents trying to raise their children on one income. Statistically, of children under age six in female-headed families, 59% are poor.
38% of those we serve are children. 16% of those we serve are elderly; many of whom have had to choose between buying medicine, paying a utility bill, or groceries.
Community Storehouse is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, made up of a group of community members, and is an agency member - in good standing - with Feeding America, Feed the Children, and God's Pit Crew.
The organization is also a member of the Nonprofit Leaders Network and the Martinsville and Henry County Chamber of Commerce.
